Santa

Okay, I know I just posted, but I forgot one thing. Melinda mentioned in her blog about her quandary with kids and "lying" to them about Santa. Well, I have had the same issues with Grace. She is a very curious kid, and I seriously think that if I don't use different "special" wrapping paper for the presents from Santa, she would probably notice and ask why Santa's stuff is wrapped just like everything else. When I was a kid, I couldn't have cared less, and I wouldn't have noticed. But she does. So she's been asking me about whether Santa is real. I always try to deflect and ask her, "well what do you think?" And she answers, "Yes, I think he's real." But then she'll start to tell me how a friend of hers told her he wasn't real. (I really want to smack this kid for putting the idea in her head in the first place!) But, even though she says she thinks he's real, I think she still has doubts. Because she wrote her letter to Santa a few days ago, and wanted me to mail it. I, of course, told her I would, and as soon as she'd gone to bed, ripped it open to see what it said. It had her list of what she wanted for Christmas, and among the ipod, bunny slippers, roller skates, and other things, she also asked for a "picshur of you" (Santa), and a "picshur of your elves". What can I say...I guess she just wants proof!

May I be Santa and answer her letter? I am not quite sure what to do about the "pichurs" of Santa and his elves....you know, seeing isn't believing ;) but she wouldn't recognize my handwriting. I am planning to do letters from Santa when our kids are older. Her letter can be postmarked by the postmaster in North Pole, Alaska. Maybe just a special letter from Santa would suffice to keep her believing. You would have to tell me some things to say, though...certain things that would be meaningful to her (maybe things she has been working on during the year, great things she's done in school or specific instances of helping her mom, dad and sisters would be good).

I know your pain. I was just thinking the same thing about wrapping paper today before I read your post. No wonder our girls get along so well!

Hey Alex, that would be great, if you want to! I know how busy things are this time of year, so if you don't have time, then don't sweat it. You could comment on how well she's reading, and how she got an "E" on recent benchmark tests. No pressure, though.

That is cute that she wants a picture of santa and his elves. Seriously, you have one clever little girl. I like the idea of your friend replying to her letter. Good thing you opened it. At least you have an idea of what she is thinking. Good luck!!

Oh so cute. I love that she wants to see a picture. You have an up and coming investigative journalist-- or worse-- a lawyer!

I like to think Cubby will be fine with me explaining Santa is a symbol, yada yada yada. I'm not into keeping up some charade...easy for me to say right now--he thinks every santa he sees is Noah.

I know, I feel like a liar face but it is so fun to see the kids be excited about Santa. I thought Santa was real when I was little and I turned out and have no hatred for my parents for lying to me. In fact, those are such fond memories. Especially when I could have sworn that I saw Santa and the reindeers flying in the sky,.....I swear I did!!!! Good luck!!!

I'm just glad I don't have to deal with that right now. I know my time will come!

That is the sweetest thing. It makes me laugh too. I can't bnelieve how grown up she is, and who is this friend who is feeding her lies about Santa!! Hello, he is real! Keep us posted on her questions. She is adorable! Let's see that beautiful tree!

I love her! Doesn't it make you just a little proud that she is such an observant little "thinker?" I love hearing about your girls because it gives me a heads up for what to expect in a couple of years!! So...Thanks!!

I thought you might be interested in the real story about Santa so that you have something to tell Grace when you do have to explain that he was a real person and that we just carry on his tradition....

Some of us have some concern with Santa Claus we are concerned about what he has to do with that holy night and the Christ child, hopefully this explanation of who he is and where his story came from will set your mind at ease. His name is Saint Nicholas, a man from Turkey who was canonized by the Holy Roman Church because of his goodness on so many levels. He was a man born into great wealth, he gave is wealth to the poor and became a bishop for the church. One story tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman’s father had to offer prospective husbands something of value- a dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband, without a dowry a woman was unlikely to marry. This poor man’s daughters without dowries were therefore destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home-providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. Thus Nicholas saved these three daughters, just as our Savior saves each one of us. This story led to the custom of children hanging the stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts form Saint Nicholas. So the tradition of hanging stockings dates back to Turkey and Bishop Nicholas.

How cute! I don't think that you are lying. I do think it is funny to see how all of you are trying to come up with creative answers and such. Best of luck to you in your quest to keep the Santa secret under wraps! :)
