Tooth Trauma

Do any of you recall one of my most embarrassing moments that I shared on Megan's blog? If not, let me refresh your memory. A long time ago in a land far, far away (Utah) I was taking my required Fit for Life course at good old UVSC. I had put off taking the course until my last semester before graduating. I'm a great procrastinator...but in my defense I did bear a child during those years, so I had somewhat of an excuse. I took it with my sister-in-law, Marie, which was the only thing that made the class remotely bearable. We were living with the Aitken's at the time, so it was very convenient to get up on Saturday mornings and drive to school together in the dead of winter. (As convenient as it could be, I guess, considering it was on Saturday!) Well, one fun Saturday morning we were doing circuit training in one of the workout rooms. Half the class was doing cardio on treadmills, ellipticals, etc. And the other half was doing weight training. We would do each for a set amount of time and then switch when the teacher blew the whistle. Well, Marie and I were working on the weights when we heard the whistle to switch. We immediately headed over to two empty treadmills. Very nonchalantly, I hopped on up to start my workout...only to be knocked completely off my feet and thrown off the treadmill. That's right, some dimwit had left the machine running after leaving it. Hello!!! And me, already a dimwit, didn't notice. In my defense, the room was very noisy, and it is hard to tell that the conveyor belt is moving, when it's moving very fast! I got pretty banged up, but my pride got the better of me and I hopped right back on the blasted machine and completed my workout.

So let's fast forward a few years. And we'll find out what happens when you fall off a treadmill.

I'm sitting in the dentist chair after several years of no visits due to lack of insurance, and my dentist asks me if I've suffered a tooth trauma, because my left front tooth appears to be slightly darker than the other one. I had noticed, but I thought it was nothing that a little bleach wouldn't fix. Apparently not. An exray confirmed the fact that indeed my tooth had been traumatized and the root had shrunk back significantly. Well, long story short, they told me that at some point I would probably want to have that tooth either veneered or crowned so that it would match the rest of them. I've waited three years now since hearing that wonderful news, and started the process a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if you know the process, but they have to wittle your tooth down to a veritable nub to do this work. We decided to try doing a veneer since it was much more conservative. So I had a temporary veneer for a couple of weeks while they were custom-making a veneer that would match my other teeth. Yesterday was the day that I was supposed to get my veneer. What a disaster! The tooth looked WAY fatter than my other front tooth and it still looked yellow. No improvement at all, if anything it was worse. So the dentist tells me that they need to prep it for a full crown. Okay, fine. I can live with that. So they then proceed to wittle down my tooth even more. (There's pretty much nothing left by now.) And the dental assistant makes me another temporary. Here's where I have a major problem. The temporary is hideous! I'm not exaggerating. I think I could have made a better temporary...and I have NO experience. It's all bumpy and weird colored and just plain ugly. So I'm walking around not wanting to smile or talk to anyone because I don't want them to notice my gimp tooth. My confidence has really been shaken with this dentist and the lab. I really hope that I have normal looking teeth when I come home next Thursday. If I don't...someone's gonna get hurt! But I guess there are worse things in life...I could have this guy's teeth!

And, no, I won't be posting pictures of my teeth. I won't even show Trevor.

Oh, Annie...that stinks! I hate teeth things. I have a bridge that I think doesn't match the other side of my teeth, and I've always hated it, but at least I'm not afraid to talk. Hope they get the new one soon!

Oh Annie!! How awful! My brother in law had to have a veneer put on his teeth but for some reason they fell out leaving only his poor whittled teeth behind. Yikes. I'm so sorry.

Annie. You are too funny! I hate going to the dentist. I say pull them all out and then we can wear dentures and not have to worry about this dumb stuff. Best of luck!

Annie, I am laughing hysterically picturing you walking around trying to hide your weird fake tooth. That is just about one of the the best embarassing moments I have ever heard. I love it! Well, at least you don't have an entire mouth full of cavities! I have the softest teeth. Nightmare of my life. Anyway, good luck Thurdsay. :)

Chicklets anyone? Just kidding. I feel so bad for you. First for falling so hard on the treadmill...oh my gosh, I had never heard that story. Too funny...and sad. Second, because there is nothing worse than teeth problems. How do I know you ask? Um I am the "queen of crowns" since I have app. 10 crown and five root canals. Yep, not the best of teeth. Mine don't look wierd anymore because they are all freakin crowns. Underneath all these crowns I probably do look like that picture of that guy! I hope the crown looks awesome!

I am dying laughing. Sorry. I had a crown, and it felt so wrong when they shaved my tooth down to a numbbin'! I was so sad. I felt like a hill billy! (No offense to hill billies) I was almost on my way to visit you the other week. I was supposed to go to Vegas with my sister and for some reason she almost canceled on me. I thought I could just change my ticket and come see you. I am sure just what you want. I show up on your door step, and you have no teeth. I am a little sad we won't see any pictures! :)

I went to the office today and they fixed the temporary so that I don't look like a freak anymore. So that's nice.

Min,
You can come to my house anytime!! Teeth or no teeth. You are always welcome. I'll be seeing all of you very soon, though!

Oh, and to add more to my embarrassment after the treadmill incident. The following Saturday we were doing the same circuit workout, and the teacher gathered everyone around and said, "Now everyone, please remember to turn off your machines when you finish...a student of mine fell off last week." Hello!!! Like everyone didn't already know who he was talking about. I was standing right there. Thanks teacher, for adding to my humiliation and bringing it up once again. Luckily I now live in Texas and don't have to run into any of those people anymore!

Oh my gosh! I'm scared for you! I know that you will not settle for anything less than the best, so I'm sure if it isn't right you will MAKE it right or else! I'm sorry about your temporary tooth. I can only imagine the embarrassment. Just know that I will always think you are great- no matter what your teeth look like!

Annie, I really do feel for you! Just make sure that if this new crown does not look good, go to a cosmetic specialist. DO NOT SETTLE for a less-than-fabulous-looking tooth, because modern dentistry can make that happen! My brother was too nice to say that his tooth implant was hideous, and to this day, I sit there and stare at it when I talk to him (don't let this make you paranoid, though, because I always stare at people's teeth because I used to work in the dental field)! I think the way people feel about their smiles really affects their self confidence, so you need to make sure you are happy with the final product you are paying for! Good luck!

Oh no! This sounds awful! Now I am scared about the appointment I have scheduled next week with my dentist. I guess I haven't been good about reading blogs lately because I see this was posted at the end of May. Hope that means your teeth are gorgeous again!
P.S. You guys will be at the family reunion this year, won't you?

OH Annie, that is so sad, despite it's hilarity. Sorry to have you explain the whole thing to me the other night at dinner, I should have just kept up with your blog!!!

I loved seeing you the other night, you are a breath of fresh air! xoxo
