And apparently in a HUGE hurry to get here. So here's the story:
***Let me just preface the story with a warning. If you don't want the details unfiltered with a little mild language, then please don't read***
Let me start this story on last Tuesday (the 16th)...
I went to my weekly doctor's appointment and I was dilated to 4 cm. I had been contracting on and off, and just feeling "different." At dinner I still wasn't feeling right, and my contractions were becoming more regular. I threw up my dinner, and...long story short, we went to the hospital at midnight, they had me walk the halls for an hour to see if my contractions would get to be 2 minutes apart and my cervix show a change (I was still a 4). We walked until 2 am, and while my contractions were definitely 2 minutes apart, there was no change in my cervix, so they sent me home. (With the sage advice to not come back until the contractions hurt! Yes that is said with sarcasm, and you'll see why.)
Well, I threw up the next morning and was still having contractions along with upper intestinal cramps. And then, everything calmed down for a few days. So my theory is I had some sort of intestinal "bug" that caused the contractions, which ended up being false labor. I had been so uncomfortable and contracting so much that I was just really bugged that they sent me home. My doctor had scheduled an induction at 39 weeks, which was the 26th, so I was just planning on not having a baby until then. I did not want to go back to that hospital until they couldn't turn me away...what can I say, I was pretty bitter. So we enjoyed the rest of Spring Break with the girls home and Trevor's brother Brett in town.
Sunday we went to church as usual. It was pretty uncomfortable to sit through 3 hours of church, and my swelling was getting pretty unsightly, but I felt like I needed to be there since I was going to have the baby on Friday at the latest. At 5 o'clock I went to choir practice because I was playing the piano. I had started having contractions, but they didn't seem regular enough to time, so I went to choir and was EXTREMELY uncomfortable. We got home at 6:30, and started figuring out dinner for the kids, and I decided that I better sit down and start timing the contractions "just in case", since they were starting to hurt a little bit. They started out at about 9 minutes apart, then they jumped to 5 minutes apart. But this didn't make me nervous because I had had contractions that close before and they had just sent me home. Well, I think I only had 3 contractions that were 5 minutes apart, and then they went kamikaze on me. They were one right on top of another. I could tell Trevor was starting to panic and started getting my purse and telling me we needed to leave. He had to pick me up off the floor and push me out the door. We were getting in the car at 7:47, and my water broke. Then I started to panic. I knew I was definitely in labor and they couldn't send me home, so as we were racing to the hospital, the contractions got even crazier. Trevor likes to say I was my own siren. And all I kept thinking, and saying was, "I just want my epidural, I just want my epidural, I can't do this, I don't want to do this." Poor Trevor was listening to all this babble in between the wails of pain, while running stop signs and racing through traffic. Luckily the hospital is pretty close, and it was a Sunday night so the traffic was low. Well, we pulled up to the ER, and Trevor raced inside and said "my wife is having a baby!" But, if you know Trevor, he's not really a "freak out" kind of guy, so I don't think the way he told them really motivated them to move. My window was down (still can't remember how that happened), and my screaming "he's coming out...oh $#!T", I think that motivated them to move. I felt all this downward pressure, so I laid my seat back, and all of the sudden he was out. I kept saying, "oh that feels better, that feels better!" Seconds after, the nurses showed up and got him the rest of the way out, cut the cord, rushed the baby inside, put me on a gurney to take me inside, gave me the baby and walked us up to Labor and Delivery. And that is where they delivered the placenta, and stitched me up, etc. For several hours after that, Trevor and I just kept saying "I can't believe that just happened." It never even crossed my mind that I would be having my baby in the car until I was having the baby in the car! And I can now say that I have experienced natural childbirth. I don't know how women do that for hours and hours. But what I think is really funny is that nurse that told me to wait to come when the contractions hurt...I told the on-call doctor that, and she said "Not when it's your 4th baby, and you were already dilated to a 4!" (Well, she was the same on-call doctor that had sent me home the Tuesday before! So Trevor and I just rolled our eyes at each other and smiled.)
(the next morning before the girls went to school, they came to meet their baby brother)So that's our story of how our amazingly cute and precious baby boy came to our family. Sorry it took me over a week to post it, but I have a new baby...give me a break!

So crazy! WOW! You gave a great recount of the experience. Can't believe you were at a four for so long! Congrats on your sweet little boy! You guys sure do have a darling family.
Oh my goodness! A baby in the CAR?? That is so crazy. I can't believe that you had that experience, its amazing. He is so darling and I love his name. I wanted to have Preston in my baby's name, but Joe wasn't a huge fan. I love it. You are super brave, I am in awe...
I will admit that I have checked your blog daily since I saw your post on FB that you had just delivered a baby in the car... but I was trying to be patient since you had just had a baby in your car :) What an amazingly crazy story. I loved it (but that's because it wasn't me- he he!) No really, congratulations to you and Trevor. He's so handsome. I can't wait to meet him in person some day! Love you guys!
Yowsa!! I am amazed! Holy Cow! I still can't believe it. I can't imagine living it, nor do I want to. You birthed your own baby pretty much. Um, you need to be on a TV show or something. That is so awesome! I am so happy he is here and with you all. He is a lucky little fellow to have you as his mom, and you're not to shabby yourself Trev.
Adding to the story...(Trevor narrating) - When Annie began saying over and over, "Oh that feels so much better" she tried to take her pants (my pajamas) off and the nurses tried to stop her. So I reached my hand down, felt James' head and said, "Well his head is out already so we better deliver the rest of him now." That's when the ER nurses finally jumped into action. All of the people that tend to frequent an ER on a Sunday evening were congratulating me - they certainly were provided free entertainment that night! I am working on getting the security video - so perhaps we can post a picture from it in the future. Hilarious! You had to be there. :)
Okay, I have been checking you blog every day for this update and All I can say is Oh. My. Freaking. Gosh. I can't believe this story. You are such a trooper Annie! So it sounds like it all happened so fast that you didn't really have time to realize all the pain. I would love to see that security video. What a great story. Congrats you guys. Little James is super cute.
Great story! So happy everything ended well. The picture of your family of six is very sweet. Here is one grandmother's advice: take your time getting back into the routine and be good to yourself. Just enjoy this new little guy because the time goes so quickly.
I still just laugh every time I think about this whole thing! I can't wait to meet him. I have to talk myself out of jumping on a plane daily!
AHHHHH!! That is SO crazy! Seriously, I can't believe the same doctor sent you home and that was there on your delivery night. I also can't believe you still went to choir. I can't imagine trying to play while contractions were going on. You are tough!! Your first boy sure came in with a BANG! Thanks for sharing. It was well worth the wait. :)
Congrats to you and Trevor (and the kiddos too!!). What a beautiful boy!
Oh how I love you Annie! You just say things and it sounds just like I'm talking to you! But I seriously can't believe that you actually had a baby in your car! What a way to enter the world little James! I hope you're all doing well, and I can't wait to see how cute the little guy continues to get with the great genes you guys have!
Annie-- you just one-upped my story with Anchor!! AWESOME STORY! I've been checking the blog multiple times daily.. that is, until my computer died! I'm so proud of you! I'm curious how close you live to the hospital. Good for Trev for running stop lights... when I was in labor w Anchor, Peter stopped at the red light on center street at 4 am, because he didn't want to get a dui for driving while on Ambien. I was not a happy camper.
I am so happy for you two-- wish I could have been there observing the hilarity! xo
Annie! Wow! You're amazing--I can't even imagine being in the car, wow! I delivered one naturally unintentionally (the anesthesiologist went home and had to come back when they called him. He stuck his head in the room just as I was delivering Madi's head, didn't need his services after all!) so I totally understand "that feels better!" It does!! lol Of course I can't imagine being in a car and going through that---wow! I guess he'll always have a story to tell--2 lies and 1 truth: I was born in Mexico, I was born with 6 toes on each foot and I was born in a car. (He doesn't have 6 toes, right?) Just kidding!
Congrats, he's just beautiful!!!
I too have been anxiously awaiting that story. You guys are plain amazing. Matt and I also enjoyed Trevors narrations in the comments! So happy to hear that all is good and that you have the best story to tell. Love ya!
I love reading about experiences others have had with babies coming out quickly! I was laughing reading this post.
I hope all is well! Take care of yourself and your beautiful family!

Congrats on that cute baby boy and i am so glad everyone is safe and sound. I just cannot believe it...you guys better not ever get rid of that car, that is baby james birthplace, on the other hand, if u do sell it one day..i wouldn't mention there was a baby born in there, might not be a great selling point:) Love ya
BEST STORY EVER!
OH MY GOODNESS! I just sat and read that with my mouth gaping and bug eyes! What the--! I would say your choice of words was mild, considering the circumstances. I am in shock for you--I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT! Great story. Seriously great story. Whew! And the pictures are pretty--you all look so PRETTY! You would never know you just dropped a baby in the front seat of a car...I'm still in shock. Thanks for updating amid new baby/PTSD!

Congrats!!! Having a baby natural and in the car!! You are now considered a SUPERMOM!! He is so adorable! I can't believe your kids are so big. They all are so adorable!
Okay, so I've been terrible about keeping up with blogs! This was such a fun (after the fact, of course) story to read! I'm glad everything was okay and everyone healthy. I totally agree with you about natural child birth. I don't know why anyone would CHOOSE to go that route!
Your family is so beautiful, Annie. Congratulations (several months late)!
